Boys learn most from the men around them.

James Roberts, Tenerife. One man's position, stated so you can weigh what the rest of the site says.

Who he is

James Roberts, born in Manchester in 1976. Nearly twenty years in travel and hospitality recruitment, latterly running a firm of twenty. He has interviewed and met men all over the world through wars, recessions, a financial crisis and a pandemic.

He drank daily from eighteen to forty-five, went into residential treatment in June 2020, and has not drunk since. He moved to Tenerife that December and ran a small BnB there for five years, which he sold.

What he is not

He is not a parent coach, a teacher, a social worker or a child psychologist, and he holds no qualification in any of it. He does not present his own life as an example to copy.

What he has observed

Men learn far more from the example of other men than from being told.

The men others respected tended to be reliable rather than impressive.

Asking basic questions, and being fine with not knowing, made men better at almost everything.

Respect given appropriately is usually returned. Animals know it too.

Observation from one vantage point, not a law, a framework or a prediction about you.
